This photo shoot was lovely with Karen. Not only is she a talented fashion designer but she worked it as the model. Her clothing is stylish but also she thought about the movement of the garment/pieces, with panels and specialized cuts. Everything fits perfectly and is really unique. At the show, her pieces were sold out but everyone was eager to get on a waiting list. It’s worth the wait, Karen’s clothes are made to last.

I wrote a blog entry targeted towards artists called Keeping up with Change. “It’s important to keep current with the market. As time changes and new trends emerge, how well are you keeping your portfolio current?”

But as a marketer, I was wondering if I was keeping my ideas current. It’s so easy to fall back into a comfortable place and for me, it was my website. It had been useful but as time progressed, I was wondering how much of a help was to me. The last one was created to give it a cleaner look and simpler feel. It listed the artists that I represent such as Carl Clark, Michael Roberts and Mario Pantoja to name a few. It showed the commercial in house photography that I’ve shot, work I’ve designed and links to businesses that I supported. I felt that it was time to redesign it and due to some unexpected life changes that date kept getting pushed back. And I had questions about the site: Was it something that I wanted or needed? Or was it just there keeping an unneeded space warm on the web?

So to answer the questions I looked at my work activity. Primarily, I’m creating email campaigns, promotional pieces for artists to send to agencies, and of course blogging. Along with promoting business clients product/boutiques online and maintain/building their websites. Plus, I have a fan page for Liquid Aperture that has over 500 fans and a friend list of over 3,600.

By looking at my activity I’ve decided to say goodbye to my website. I will keep the domain name with an info page but I will utilize the social networks/fan page more for marketing and building clients. Also, continue to market in more of an active sense with campaigns and blogging instead of a static state of a website focusing on marketing and promotions. Websites still work for certain kinds of businesses such as retail and the products or boutiques need a more traditional yet modern display online.

But for me, I can cover more ground and be more successful by changing things up a bit.

Sonic Pistol - Photo Shoot

I always have a great time photographing Sonic Pistol. The photo shoots are full of jokes and laughs. Not only are they extremely talented and hot but they are down to earth Chicago guys. The sole thing better than listening to their music is seeing them perform it live.

They will performing Friday, Feb. 25th at the Elbo Room for the official EP release show for the band Along The Parallel, along with A Friend Called Fire.

I came across this article during my morning research time on the net. I found it extremely helpful and encouraging, if these moms are using it to further their businesses while still laboring in the joys of parenting, then anyone could.

Some people have had some resistance in Twitter. Maybe it's because it only 147 characters or their not tech geeks. But if you have a business and not a lot of cash, time, man power ect. then Twitter might be the way to go. Their tips are short and sweet just like Tweets. Is being a Social Networker good for business?

It’s important to promote your business and to let as many people know about it as you can. Being active with social sites can help build your brand or company’s reputation. But social networking can be intimidating. Here are a few pointers to get you started.

Can I just post about my company or product?

Networking and selling don’t mix – if you are there to network then don’t flood people with what you are selling constantly. You can save that for your website or blog. It’s ok sometimes but make sure you update your status with others topics besides your new product. It makes you seem one sided and could reflect what people think about your company of product and that’s no fun.

How can I call strangers friends?
Even though it’s called a friend list, think of it as a connection list. Add strangers not just your friends, if you are trying to network. You need to reach outside of your comfort zone. And remember, you can always delete them if you feel they are not the right fit. The point is to network, which means building up your contacts not just retaining the old ones. Try to make your friends people who are in your field, people you would like to reach with your product and those who could assist with catapulting it to the top of the market.

Do I need check it every day?
Participate as much as you feel comfortable with but do to participate in the social network. If you find it overwhelming, look at your contact’s pages and see what kinds of things they post. You can response on their page, if you are still feeling a little reluctant.

I don’t want to be “plugged in” all the time. Sounds like a huge commitment...

It easy to add updates with all the new app and gadget phones on the market. But it doesn’t have to give you a headache. Remember to have a balance - If you are always updating but never participating by adding comments or responding to emails. The people on your “friends” list might start o feel like your snubbing them or don’t feel like they are important. Remember to take a break if you need one. Don’t visit the social site for a week or two. Perhaps, take time to work on your blog or get away from the computer all together.

Note:
Networking although it’s social it can help spread the word about your business. If you are there for business then your page should reflect it. Don’t post anything that you wouldn’t want a client to see. Remember that once it’s out there on the web it’s out there forever.

With every year, we all have a chance to grow as business owners, artists and as people. But something tells me that this will be your year to shine. To show the world your talents and by the end of 2010, people will know who you are and what you do.

Organization for Small Business and Artists

Here are a few tips to help you get organize and make the most of your time towards completing your goals.

Pick an area your house that you spend a lot of time in to become command central, for example, the kitchen. Then add the following to start getting organized:

Monthly calendar - A monthly calendar allows you to see how and when you are busy during the month. Use it for everything, every task you do write it down on the calendar. You can make one yourself with a large poster board or purchase a desk calendar and place it on the wall.

Two week lists - Make space for your daily activities for two weeks. This is for more of a detailed daily list. By having a two week list, you have room to write all of your weekly goals and errands. Add a color code the two week list with different colored paper or pens for important events.

Wish list - Add a wish list of things you would like to buy to help with your promotions. Your wish list could include a large work table or new software.

Receipt box - Place a box for all of your monthly receipts. Remember, that no purchase is too small for the receipt box. So when you add up everything you will know how you spend your money instead of guessing.

Quotes – Write a few of your favorite quotes on index cards and taped them to the wall. It may seem unnecessary, but when you come to a stand still those quotes will get you moving towards your goals again.

No matter how great your product or art work is, no one will know unless you promote.
By truly understanding your time and your habits, you will be to devote more quality time and funds to marketing your art or business.

Keeping Up with Change

It’s important to keep current with the market. As time changes and new trends emerge, how well are you keeping your portfolio current?

As an artist, sometimes it’s hard to see your work to judge it independently. But this is essential to know how others perceive your work and to make sure that you add new pieces to your portfolio.

A way to do that is by giving yourself new assignments. If you are an illustrator or cartoonist, you could create artwork about a politician or another public figure. A commercial photographer could shoot a new trendy product or create an advertisement.

Some artists might find this difficult and feel that their work should stand the test of time. But as some things stay the same it important to show growth as an artist and have the ability to convey your style with a current subject matter. By doing this, it may catch the eye of an art director who feels that they have seen your work but not in this new presentation.

If you are having trouble judging your own work, you could meet with an artist rep for a consultation. By allowing someone who is in the field see your work and listening to their critic, could advance you to a level you couldn’t have dream of.

Putting your ducks in a row

As an artist, it is important to know what your goals are and how you would like to accomplish them. Here are some helpful hints to prepare you for success with working with a rep..

Where should I start?
Make sure that you know what market you would like to work in. Would you like to use your skills to be a fine artist in gallery shows or work in the advertising field? Look at the work that is coming out of your desired field. Then do your research.

Let’s cheer for teamwork!
Know that your relationship with your rep is a working one. Which means, both of you are working towards one common goal –your success. So when your rep asks for certain files or new artwork, do your best to deliver them. Your rep is working to promote your work but that can’t happen if you don’t provide the tools.

Want to check on your reps progress? Ask for a status meeting!
A status meeting is a great way to see what your reps next step is. Ask what you can do to help your rep make progress towards your goals. Exchange ideas and trouble shoot together.

Seeds are being planted..
This means that just because you haven’t had a new assignment doesn’t mean that your promos weren’t sent or phone calls weren’t made. It may take a couple of contacts before an art or creative director will ask for a bid. Keep your focus and make sure that your artwork connects with the field you would like to work in.

By having your goals in place and doing your research, your experience with your rep will be a pleasant and possibly a very profitable one.

Fundrasing Event March 13 2009

This year the event to help support the organization Inspiration Corp., was held at the River East Art Center near Navy Pier. It was a lovely event with a smaller amount of artwork for the auction. It had an addition of dream jobs and other items for the live auction. Although from the response of the room, it seems that the guests prefer the artwork. The starting bids were raised to 175.00 for the variety of artwork that was there which seemed to be on the artists who were emerging or established. The event was tastefully decorated and had delicious food donated by Food For Thought. Overall it was a successful event for the organization, the patrons and artists who attended. Michael Roberts' photograph, Sprig, went to a happy art buyer who will enjoy the piece in their office or home.
